Hunting & Being a Weekend Widow

Weekend Widow

Gary, Richard, Bill, and Doug

Oh, how well I know the date September 1st and the season that follows: Dove Season.  I have long called myself a “weekend widow.”  Bill has never missed an opening day since he has been walking and neither has Billy.  And school is always in session on September 1st, though my husband and son would never know it.  Who needs to go to class (or work for that matter?) when you can be hunting?  As a matter of fact, you may recall that Bill and I recently celebrated our 35th wedding anniversary on August 23rd.  That left exactly one week for us to honeymoon and return for opening day.  I’m not kidding.

Riley Jane’s First Hunt!

There was more than a little concern when I was due with Emily at the end of August back in 1979, but thankfully she came early on the 11th and potential arguments were avoided.  Then, funny enough, Becky was due mid-September, and there was a lot of teasing about if Billy would have to miss the birth of his first child so as not to miss a lifelong tradition.  Riley came Septmeber 5th and all was well once again….which brings me to today.  Riley is 3 and is traveling a rite of passage in the McCord family- she is going on her first hunt this season!

I’ll let you know how it goes!  😉

  3. […] posted not so long ago about the woes of being a weekend widow and how Riley would be getting to go on her first hunt this fall!  Well, Bill and Billy loaded her […]
