Weekend Recipe: Homemade Popcorn

Family Movie Night!

Reading Emily’s post about making her first batch of homemade popcorn last week reminded me of when we used to do it.  I’m sure the kids were too small to remember, or maybe I just did it with my parents…which may well be the case.  We used to have special Sunday nights where we made and ate homemade popcorn, apples, and when I was older, drank Diet Rite Cola!  I really love those memories!  Anyway, I thought I’d share just how easy popping your own popcorn really is!

  • a large stock pot with a lid
  • oil
  • a cup of corn kernels
  • salt

One batch is made, the next is just starting to pop!

Put your pot on med-hi heat and pour some oil in the bottom.  You don’t need to coat the bottomWeekend, but maybe a couple tablespoons.  Drop in 1 kernel.  When it has popped, pour enough kernels to cover the bottom of the pot, but not be on top of each other.  Put the lid on.  The kernels should all pop without burning, but if you start to smell burning kernels, go ahead and pour out what you have in a bowl.  You can always pick out the burned ones and still enjoy the good ones.  Keep popping to your heart’s content- in no time, you’ll have enough for a family movie night!  (Salt as desired.)
